6. Teaching and Learning process
The
teacher opened the lesson with greeting. He asked the students to open their
text books. All students have the english book and start to open and read as
the teacher’s instruction. The material of that meeting was degree of
comparison. The teacher brought the flash cards as a media and showed it to all
students. The picture in the flash card is the same as in the book. Then the
teacher and the students had an interaction about the picture. Teacher asked
what kind of animal, how many thing in the picture, etc. That activity made a
comunicative learning. It made students more active in the class. Then the
teacher draw 3 circle with 3 different size. He asked the students to compare
it and find what the different, after that the teacher and students mentioned the
differences together.
When
the teacher showed the flash card one by one, the teacher mentioned the
activity in the card and all students repeat what the teacher said. Teacher
gave the instruction to the first row from the right side class to answer
teacher’s question about the picture in the flash card. Move to second row and
the last to the third row. Teacher gave reinforcement when the students aswer
the question like “good!”, “very good!” and “excellent!”. After all row, the
teacher gave the instruction to made a group consist of 2 students in one
group. Then the teacher asked about the picture to each group and followed with
the reinforcement. The last, teacher asked about the picture to the students
one by one and also followed with the reinforcement.
After
that, the teacher made a sentence as an example about the same pictures in the
flash cards and gave the next instruction to make a sentence from the pictures
in the flash cards. When the students busy to wrote the sentence, teacher looked
around the class to watch students activity. After all finish, many students
come foward to the class closely to the teacher to give the book that they
wrote. Then the teacher evaluate the student’s work.
When
the teacher evaluated the book, the students became noisy in the class. So the
teacher got closely to the whiteboard and made a bad behavior square with a
marker. He wrote “Ahmad” in the square as a signal to all students who get
noisy when the teacher’s have to get attention.
The
teacher read a short dialogue in the book, then all students repeat the
dialogue. Teacher read the dialogue together with student’s group and also one
by one. After that, teacher gave an instruction to make a group consist of 2 students.
Every group should make a dialogue, and
they had to practice in front of the teacher as an evaluate. Afterward, the teacher
read a long dialogue in the book and students repeat the dialogue. Then the
student’s group should memorizing the dialogue. The student came foward to the
class to practice the dialogue and the teacher was listening to them. After all
the group finished to come forward, the teacher closed the lesson.
7. How the Class Meet Our Expecations
During
the class observation, there are some poin did meet our expectation. Number of
students in 6A is 26, so it appropriate with our expectation which is we expect
the students is 25-30. Learning process was interactive. It’s proven when the
teacher and the students discussed the flash card, and when the teacher asked
question, the students always answer it together. So, both teacher and students
are active. The teacher also gave instruction in English such as “open the book
page 24”, “listen and repeat after Mr.Asep”, etc. He gave clear instruction in
English, but when the students didn’t understand the meaning, he spoke
Indonesian. The teacher used flash card as the media. Unfortunately the flash
card is too small, because it couldn’t be seen from the back of the class. The
teacher already gave reinforcement to the students such as good, very good, and
excellent.
However,
there are some poin of the process didn’t meet our expectation. The teacher’s
time management is quite messy. It was too long when the teacher evaluate the
student’s work, so the class became noisy. Moreover, the teacher in hurry
closed the lesson and just said the greeting without any conclusion of today’s
learning. The learning process wasn’t really fun. It was quite boring because
too much repetitive instruction, such as listen and repeat the sentences (both
the sentences which describe the flash card and the dialog). Futhermore, there
was no song or games. So, it made the students stuck on their chair and book.
The teacher dind’t give any homework to the students. It made the student
couldn’t follow up the material.
8. Reflection and Rethingking of ‘Good’
EFL Teaching
There
are many component that support the process of teaching and learning activity.
The component such as the teacher, the student, the material’s, the purpose,
the method, and the media. The component must be appropriate with the student
level, needs, and interests. The component will be described further.
8.1 The Teacher
The
good teacher for young learner is the teacher who understand the student’s
needed. The teacher should has important competence susc as pedagogis
competence, professional competence, personal competence, and social
competence. Furthermore, the teacher also should has eight skills, those are
ask question, explain, motivation, variety, open and closed leson, coaching
team discuss, manage class, and the last learning little team or personal.
8.2 The Student
The
students is an important component of teaching and learning activity. They
should active in learning process. Every student is unic. Therefore, the
teacher should understand them for different background, characteristic, and
their ability.
8.3 The Material
The
material which given to the student should be considered to meet the
curriculum, the student level, the student characteristic, and the student
interest. The teacher can make the material become interesting.
8.4 The Purpose
One
of the purpose from English Education is
to communicated with English. The student could interact with many
people. The teacher should coordinate the lesson goal with the lesson activity
in the class.
8.5 The Method
Many
method used in English education. The teacher can get many information about
method from books or internet. The teacher can choose method that appropriate
and interesting for children. The teacher can use ice breaking, song, and games
in teaching and learning activity.
8.6 The Media
The
students can understand the material which taught with media. The teacher must
prepare media for learning activity to make the material more concrete. Media
also can make the teacher easier to teach.
From
the observation, we also found that some student become bored with the
teacher’s method. This shows us that method is important in teaching EFL. The
teacher should colaborate the method with fun activity such as song and games.
So, the children can active in learning process and learning process become
meaningfull.
